Railroad roots and newer households: coins from Allen
Allen began as a stop on the Houston and Texas Central, which laid out the town in 1872. In February 1878 a gang held up the train here in what is said to be the first train robbery in Texas. That same year the U.S. Mint struck its first Morgan silver dollars, a coin that still turns up in Allen estates today.
The town stayed small for a long time. It had only a few hundred residents when it incorporated in 1953, and most of its growth came later, after US 75 opened up the corridor and Plano filled in to the south. Much of today's Allen, from the neighborhoods off Exchange Parkway to the shops at Watters Creek and the outlet mall along the highway, went up in the decades since.
That history gives Allen two kinds of seller. One is the family with deep Collin County farm roots, holding silver dollars, wheat cents and maybe a few large-size notes printed before 1929. The other moved here for a job and the schools, and holds bullion, Gold Eagles or a child's starter collection. Those farm boxes often hold more than dollars. Buffalo nickels with worn-off dates, Mercury dimes and Standing Liberty quarters ride along in cloth bank bags. The dimes and quarters are 90% silver. Buffalo nickels hold no silver at all, though Jefferson war nickels from 1942 to 1945 carry 35%. Gold Eagles have been struck since 1986. The one-ounce coin is 22K and weighs 33.93 grams, and our state-inspected scale confirms that in front of you.
Allen is also a football town, and Friday nights at Eagle Stadium are a big part of local life. Some families keep commemorative medals and silver rounds stamped for a team or an event. We will tell you plainly which pieces are silver and which are keepsakes. A medal with no precious metal belongs in the family, not on our scale.
Collin County handles probate for Allen, and an executor there will usually want everything on paper. We list each coin with date, mint mark, grade and value on a written appraisal. Texas law also asks us to record a photo ID for every seller, so bring a license. Book a weekday time at (469) 754-8608, and for a collection too heavy to carry, ask about a home visit.

Selling coins from Allen
Are 1878 Morgan dollars worth more than later ones?
Some are. 1878 was the first year of the Morgan dollar, and several varieties from that year draw collector interest. We check the mint mark, variety and grade on each coin before we price it.
Do you buy the big old paper bills from Allen farm estates?
Yes. Those oversized bills date from before 1929, and their series, seal color and condition set the price. Store them loose in an envelope until the appointment.
Is a school or team commemorative medal worth anything?
Only if it contains silver or gold. It goes under the XRF reader, and we tell you honestly if it is a keepsake with no metal value.
Which probate court handles estates in Allen?
Allen is in Collin County, so estates usually go through Collin County probate. Our written appraisal lists every coin, which helps the executor and the heirs.
