From mill-town silver to 24K savings: coins from Garland

Garland exists because two towns argued over a post office. Duck Creek and Embree sat close enough to share one, and in 1887 it moved to a spot between them under a new name, Garland. The rivals merged in 1891. The downtown square that grew from that compromise is now on the National Register, and the Plaza Theatre still draws a crowd there.

Industry came in the 1930s and 1940s: a pickle plant, a Western hat factory, radio broadcasting and wartime aircraft work. Families who worked those lines saved the money of their day. Their estates still produce Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters and Franklin halves, all 90% silver when dated before 1965.

The city grew about fourfold during the 1950s, and much of the housing from that decade is now passing from original owners to their children. Those homes tend to hold mint and proof sets bought in the 1950s and 1960s, silver certificates from the same years, and a few Kennedy halves. Halves dated 1964 are 90% silver. Those dated 1965 to 1970 are 40%, and later ones carry none, so we sort them before anything is weighed.

Garland also has one of the larger Vietnamese American communities in the country, with shops clustered along Walnut Street. Gold has long been a way to save in many of those families, often as 24K rings, chains or small wafers, and some hold gold coins sent from relatives abroad. The XRF reader puts the number on screen, so you see 24K come up as 99.9% gold instead of taking anyone's word for it, and we price it from today's spot.

Clad coins are the other half of the story. Dimes and quarters dated 1965 and later hold no silver, so we count those out and hand them back for you to roll at the bank. Nothing from a Garland bank bag gets priced as silver unless the date says it is.

Executors for most Garland estates file in Dallas County, and a written appraisal listing every coin keeps that process clean. Sellers from the Firewheel side of town and from the blocks around the square book the same way: phone (469) 754-8608, carry a license or state ID, and keep every coin exactly as you found it.

Selling coins from Garland

How do I tell which of my Kennedy halves are silver?

Check the date. 1964 halves are 90% silver, 1965 to 1970 halves are 40%, and later ones have no silver. We sort them with you and price each group separately.

Do you buy 24K gold rings and wafers?

Yes. The XRF reader shows the purity of each ring or wafer, the scale gives its weight, and the offer follows today's gold price. You see the math line by line before you decide.

Are 1950s proof sets from a Garland estate worth more than face value?

Usually, because the dimes, quarters and halves in sets from those years are 90% silver. Some years also carry collector interest, so we look at each set before pricing it.

Is it better to remove coins from old cardboard holders first?

No. Leave them as they are. Original holders protect the surfaces, and handling or cleaning a coin can lower its grade.
