World coins, Centenarios and gold bars from Irving and Las Colinas

Before it was Irving, the crossroads here went by Gorbit and then Kit. The town was platted in 1903 and incorporated in 1914, and it stayed tiny for years, with only a few hundred people in the mid-1920s. Families from that era left behind the kind of coins you would expect from a small farm town: Barber dimes, Liberty nickels and a silver dollar or two.

Growth came in waves after that. The University of Dallas opened in 1956, the airport went up on the city's western edge in the 1970s, and Las Colinas grew into a planned business and residential district of more than 12,000 acres. More recently the convention center and the Toyota Music Factory brought crowds to the canals of Las Colinas. Valley Ranch, on the north side, grew up as a planned neighborhood of its own.

Living next to one of the busiest airports in the country changes what people keep in their drawers. Pilots, flight attendants and frequent business travelers come home with leftover currency from every stop. Most modern foreign coins and notes are worth little to a buyer here, and we say that up front. Older silver from Mexico, Canada and Europe is a different story, and the XRF reader shows its silver content right away.

Many Mexican American families in Irving hold Centenarios, the Mexican 50 peso gold coin, as savings or wedding gifts. A Centenario is 90% gold and holds about 1.2 troy ounces of it, so even one coin is a real sum. We read it on the screen, weigh it on our state-inspected scale and price it from today's spot. Some families also hold the smaller Mexican gold pieces, the 2, 2½ and 5 peso coins, which are priced the same way by weight and purity.

In Las Colinas and Valley Ranch, sellers tend to hold gold bars and graded coins bought during busy careers, often with the original assay cards. Keep those cards with the bars. Irving sits in Dallas County, so probate runs through its courts, and our item-by-item list of coins and bars is written for the judge, an insurer or the heirs. Book at (469) 754-8608 with a photo ID in hand, and ask about a home visit if the collection is too large to move.

Selling coins from Irving

Do you buy Mexican Centenarios?

Yes. A Centenario is 90% gold, so its offer starts from the gold inside, confirmed by the XRF reading and our scale. Dates with collector demand can bring more.

I have leftover foreign currency from years of airline work. Is it worth bringing?

Bring the coins, especially anything older. Modern pieces usually bring little, but older silver coins from Mexico, Canada and Europe sell for their metal.

Will you buy a gold bar that lost its assay card?

It is not required, though it helps. We confirm every bar on the XRF screen and the scale either way, and the card helps keep the paperwork clean.

Can you appraise a Las Colinas estate for probate?

Yes. Irving estates are handled in Dallas County, and our written appraisal lists each coin and bar with its value.
