Airplanes, flea markets and Grand Prairie coin boxes

Grand Prairie got its name from the railroad. The town started in 1863 under a different name, and in 1877 the post office switched to Grand Prairie to match the name the railroad had already given its station. Today the city stretches across four counties, from the old downtown along Main Street down past the lakes to the south.

The airplane changed everything here. During World War II, the North American Aviation plant in Grand Prairie built B-24 Liberators and P-51 Mustangs, and workers came to town for the jobs. Aircraft and missile work continued for decades under Vought and later Lockheed Martin.

Aerospace paychecks left their mark on local collections. Plant workers who earned steady wages in the 1950s and 1960s often set aside silver coins from change and bought a proof set every year from the Mint. Retirees from the missile programs tend to have Silver Eagles, Gold Eagles and sometimes a few commemorative silver dollars bought through the Mint's mail order program. We sort these by type and show you which coins sell for metal and which carry a collector premium.

Traders Village has been running since 1973 and calls itself the largest flea market in Texas. Grand Prairie collectors have bought coins there for generations, and some of those purchases were good ones. Others were not. Counterfeit Morgan dollars and fake gold coins circulate at markets and online, and some look convincing at a glance. Our XRF reader shows the actual metal content on screen in seconds with no acid, and a weight check on a state-inspected scale catches most of the rest. If something is fake, we tell you plainly and explain how we know.

Grand Prairie is also one of the most diverse cities in the region, and that variety shows up in the gold we see. Mexican gold pesos and Centenarios, 22K and 24K jewelry from South Asian and Southeast Asian families, and 18K chains from Latin America all come through. We test each by karat and weigh it in grams so you can follow the math.

Selling coins from Grand Prairie

I bought silver dollars at a flea market. How do I know they are real?

Bring them in. Our XRF reader shows the metal content on screen in seconds, and we weigh each coin. If a coin is fake, we show you why and you keep it.

Do you buy Mexican gold coins like the Centenario?

Yes. Mexican gold coins sell on their gold content, which we test and weigh in front of you. Each offer is tied to today's gold spot price.

My father worked at the aircraft plant and bought a proof set every year. What are those worth?

It depends on the years. Anything from 1964 back carries 90% silver, and most sets after that are clad and bring close to face. We go through each year with you.

Do you test 22K jewelry without acid?

Yes. We use an XRF reader that reads the metal without scratching or acid. You see the result on screen before we make an offer.
